Overview
SHPEP at Howard University is committed to providing an outstanding academically enriched program that is intended to contribute to a culture of health and promote diversity in health care by strengthening the academic proficiency and team-based care approach of underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students interested in pursuing careers in the health sciences. Howard offers the dental, medical, nursing, and pharmacy pathways.

SHPEP scholars will experience the following during the six-week program at Howard University:
Academic Curriculum
- Academic enrichment in the core science courses i.e. Genetics; Physics; Organic Chemistry; Biochemistry, (a session in mathematics); Microbiology for Healthcare Professionals. Courses offerings may change due to availability.
- STEM course assignment is based on prerequisite courses, transcript and health profession track, and the size of the class.
- Additional courses for all health profession tracks include Healthcare Ethics and Disparities/Health Policy; Cultural Competency; Introduction to Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE); and Health & Wellness Seminars.

Clinical Experience: Multiple state-of-the-art simulation centers and virtual clinical shadowing opportunities relevant to Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE) – team-based health care delivery.

Finances
Stipend: Scholars will receive $1000.00 to be paid between the second and third week of the program.
Meals: Students will receive a meal subsidy.
Living
Housing: Howard University Campus housing will be provided during weeks three to six of the program.
Social Activities: Sponsored events include a welcome dinner & White coat ceremony with reception. On campus, students will have access to university recreational facilities, pool, basketball court, gyms, libraries, etc. As we are a compact city residing in the U.S. capitol, Washington D.C. offers tours of the Washington Monument, National Museum of African Art, and variety of 4th of July activities that take place the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

Ambra Palushi
Ms. Palushi attended SMDEP in 2015 at Howard University College of Medicine. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland College Park School of Public Health in 2017. She is now a third-year medical student.

Sarah Dobson
Ms. Dobson attended SHPEP in 2017 at Howard University. A Richmond, VA native, she received her Bachelor of Science in Clinical Neuroscience from Virginia Tech in 2019. Currently, Ms. Dobson is a class of 2024 Doctor of Dental Surgery candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry.
