Noor Abduljaleel is an undergraduate student pursuing a major in human biology on the pre-med track at the University of Southern Maine with an expected graduation year of 2025. Originally from Iraq, her passion for healthcare and medicine stems from a desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others. In pursuit of her goals, Ms. Abduljaleel had the incredible opportunity to participate in the SHPEP at Rutgers University in 2022. The program allowed her to explore various aspects of the healthcare field and further solidify her aspirations of becoming a physician.
What path did you take when you first started college?
When I first started college, I began as a pre-med student. At that time, I was not entirely sure what major to pursue, but I had a strong interest in science classes. Once I entered college, I made an effort to actively engage in activities and organizations that aligned with my interests. One such organization that I joined was “Melanin in Medicine,” which focused on promoting diversity and representation in the healthcare field. This allowed me to gain valuable insights into the experiences of underrepresented groups in medicine.
Additionally, I took on the role of a tutor for general chemistry, leveraging my understanding of the subject to assist other students in their learning journey. Also, I volunteered at a hospital, specifically working with children. This allowed me to witness the impact of healthcare on young patients and their families firsthand. It was a rewarding experience that further fueled my passion for medicine and reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career where I can make a slight difference in people’s lives.
What led to your interest in a health profession?
My interest in healthcare was sparked by my experiences growing up in multiple countries around the world, including Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and now the United States. Witnessing the healthcare systems and the impact of medical professionals in different cultural contexts had a profound influence on me.
Throughout my childhood, I observed the challenges and disparities people faced in accessing healthcare. These experiences made me acutely aware of the importance of quality healthcare and the immense impact it can have on individuals and communities. I saw firsthand the difference that skilled and compassionate healthcare providers could make in improving the well-being and lives of people in need. The role of a physician stood out to me as a profession that would allow me to have an exceptionally rich experience in helping and healing people. The ability to use scientific knowledge, expertise, and skills to diagnose, treat, and support individuals in their journey toward better health resonated deeply with me.
How did SHPEP influence you?
During my time at the SHPEP, I gained valuable knowledge and experience, engaging in interactive workshops, clinical shadowing, and community service activities. The program not only enhanced my understanding of healthcare but also instilled in me the importance of diversity, inclusion, and cultural competency in delivering effective medical care. The program fostered a supportive and collaborative learning environment. I had the opportunity to connect with peers who shared similar aspirations and passions. Collaborating with and learning from individuals from diverse backgrounds further enriched my understanding of healthcare and enhanced my ability to work effectively in a team-oriented healthcare setting. By immersing myself in these activities and experiences, I was able to broaden my perspectives, develop important skills, and cultivate a deeper understanding of the healthcare field. These early college experiences laid a solid foundation for my journey toward achieving my goals.
What advice do you have for students pursuing a health professional career?
Recognize that setbacks and difficulties are a natural part of this journey. Instead of letting them discourage you, view them as opportunities for growth and learning. Each challenge you overcome will make you stronger and more resilient.
