This innovative program will cultivate the interprofessional leaders of tomorrow who have the knowledge, skills, and attitude to impact the health and healthcare of our communities. The Summer Health Professions Education Program encompasses Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, School of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing and Ernest Mario School Pharmacy that collectively offer programs beginning in 6th grade, fostering diversity in the health professions. Our goal is to prepare SHPEP scholars as future healthcare leaders that can work in interprofessional, collaborative teams to maximize the health and well-being of individuals, communities and populations. By the end of the six weeks, scholars will be able to:
- respect the unique culture, values, roles/responsibilities, and expertise of other scholars as well as diverse health professionals,
- embrace the cultural diversity and differences that characterize individuals, populations, and the healthcare team,
- demonstrate a commitment to advocacy and service as a means of addressing the social determinants of health and recognize the importance of health care policy and community partnerships on population health,
- apply effective interprofessional team building skills through the use of multimodal experiential learning strategies, such as simulation-based activities, role playing and service-learning opportunities,
- integrate knowledge from the basic and quantitative sciences to build the foundation for critical thinking and academic success in the health professions,
- develop the self-care, resilience, and reflective skills to become lifelong learners and future leaders, and
- utilize their knowledge, skills and attitudes to augment and support the contributions of their peers.
The curriculum incorporates interprofessional education competencies and leadership as foundational elements which are threaded throughout all courses and experiences. A typical week will include team building exercises, simulation/roleplaying, basic science and quantitative courses, wellness activities, academic strategies, leadership development and clinical experiences. Underlying these activities are Critical Analysis/Reasoning and Life Management Skills that will increase resilience, conﬁdence, and engagement in work. Teaching/Learning Modalities have incorporated e-learning, large group and small group interactive sessions, team-based learning (TBL), case-based discussions, tutorials, and labs. Scholars will learn about, from, and with each other in simulations and clinical experiences that enable effective collaborations and improve health outcomes. Courses include: Organic Chemistry, Calculus/Physics, integrated Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Biochemistry and Biostatistics. The Health Equity, Social Justice and Health Policy Course is a key foundational interprofessional course that will inspire and mentor future social justice champions. Students will be able to recognize the role of social determinants of health and the impact on health disparities on well-being. Topics include: unconscious bias, racism, structural racism, oppression, and stereotype threat. Emerging Issues in Healthcare include presentations by the various health care professionals such as alumni, and transplant and palliative care teams that are models for interprofessional collaborative care. Scholars improve their academic success and learn techniques to improve focus, concentration, memory, emotional well-being and effective strategies to take control of their learning. To enhance our scholars academic and communication skills, live, virtual workshops are held each week covering topics such as: Studying for the Sciences; Time Management: Breaking the Box: Critical Thinking for College & Beyond; How to Succeed in A Lecture Course; Less Stress, More Success; and Communication Skills.
Other program related activities include course reviews by teaching assistants, library skills, stress management, self-care and wellness, networking social activities and a ﬁnancial literacy and planning workshop.
Clinical Experience: Scholars participate in a new virtual clinical simulation platform. This simulation program supports the effective practice of clinical reasoning and decision-making skills through realistic virtual patient scenarios. Scholars will be exposed to lifelike situations and be able to observe changes in visible signs and symptoms or lab tests that will help them in understanding clinical care. Scholars will also engage in an interprofessional simulation based education experience, “A Day in the Life of a Health Professional,” at our Rutgers School of Nursing simulation center. Here, they will rotate through stations on vital signs, effective team communication, a newborn delivery and a mock code. This Remote Simulation Experience will expose the scholar to events they may encounter as a health care provider in a hospital setting. This experience will allow the learner to participate in the care of two patients, as a member of a health care team - one in the Medical-Surgical Unit and the other in the Maternity Unit. This is not a lecture or content driven experience but exposure to how a health care team works together and the importance each member plays to achieve positive patient outcomes.
Stipend: A $600 stipend per scholar will be distributed in two installments.
- The first installment of $300 will be distributed during the second week of the program.
- The second installment of $300.00 will be distributed during the fifth week of the program.
Meals: Students will receive a meal subsidy
Social Activities: Scholars will engage in virtual social activities which may include virtual field trips, meditation, “pet therapy”, yoga, weekly virtual lounges, HIIT Workouts, virtual games, etc., as well as weekly virtual student lounges to foster friendship and camaraderie with their peers. Scholars may also attend virtual student lunch rooms established for students, faculty, and/or teaching assistants to eat lunch and socialize.
