Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, physical distancing guidelines, and the closure of some campuses, SHPEP will again be a 100% virtual experience in summer 2021. The pandemic necessitated virtual implementation of SHPEP in 2020, and we are proud that the program was successfully delivered online to more than 930 scholars last summer. Therefore, the National Program Office is confident in the ability of our program sites to once again provide a valuable and transformative online experience to 2021 SHPEP scholars. Please continue to monitor our website for updates on the status of SHPEP 2021.
1. How will the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) affect the 2021 SHPEP application cycle and the participating program sites?
The health and safety of SHPEP scholars is our top priority. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, physical distancing guidelines, and the closure of some campuses, SHPEP will again be a 100% virtual experience in summer 2021. All application dates and deadlines remain the same.
2. As an applicant, what should I consider before submitting my application?
This application year, the NPO recommends applying to at least one (1) program site within your region. As SHPEP 2021 will be implemented online this summer, it is easier to schedule virtual SHPEP programming when participating scholars are located in the same time zone as the program site.
3. Will there be changes to any SHPEP key dates?
No, the SHPEP application opened as planned on Nov. 1. The deadline for applications is Feb. 5, and applicants will receive their decision on March 15. Be sure to learn more about the admission process and timeline.
4. I live in a COVID-19 hotspot area and I am unsure when non-essential business activities will resume. Will I be able to participate in SHPEP this year?
The health and safety of SHPEP scholars is our top priority and the NPO has been closely monitoring this quickly evolving situation. The decision to implement SHPEP virtually in summer 2021 ensures that all participating scholars will have a safe and transformative summer experience, no matter which program site they select.
5. How do I submit my transcript(s) and letter of recommendation to the NPO during COVID-19?
In light of COVID-19, SHPEP’s transcript policies have changed. The NPO now accepts transcripts via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. The NPO will continue to receive transcripts at our mailing address: SHPEP, 655 K St. NW, Suite 100, Washington, DC 20001-2399.
Please note that official transcripts must be sent directly by the institution and issued to the SHPEP National Program Office. Please email email@example.com if you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this process.
One letter of recommendation from a prehealth advisor or college professor from within your major field of study must be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or mailed to the NPO. If a recommendation cannot be submitted by a prehealth advisor or instructor within your major, the NPO will accept a letter from an employer that is within a health professions field or from a high school science teacher or guidance counselor. Review the Recommendation Requirements section for more information.
Please note that your application materials must be postmarked/timestamped by the application deadline, which is Feb. 5, 2021. Materials received with a later postmark/timestamp date will not be processed.
