Did you know? Underrepresented minorities (URMs) comprised 38.8% of K-12 public enrollment, 33.2% of the U.S. college age population, 26.2% of undergraduate enrollment, 17.7% of those earning bachelor’s degrees, and a miniscule 5.4% of science and engineering professional degrees.* There is a progressive loss of URM representation as we proceed up the academic ladder. However, mentoring and networking has been shown to be instrumental in the success of URMs.
The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) has teamed up with MentorNet to help health sciences students, from freshman year through doctoral level, navigate the path to professional school by offering mentorships.
